Assam By-Poll: BJP Releases Candidates List, Rupjyoti Kurmi to Contest from Mariani

In the three constituencies of Bhabanipur, Mariani and Thowra, the BJP projected the same candidates who had won the 2021 state polls earlier in May from former parties.

GUWAHATI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced the names of its candidates for the three constituencies for the upcoming Assam assembly by-election slated on October 30.

In the three constituencies of Bhabanipur, Mariani and Thowra, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)  projected the same candidates who had won the 2021 state polls earlier in May but later left their respective parties to join BJP.

Notably, in Bhabanipur, BJP has nominated Phanidhar Talukdar who left All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) to join BJP recently. On the other hand, in Mariani and Thowra also, BJP has projected Rupjyoti Kurmi and Sushanta Borgohain who had won the last polls from Congress.

Out of the five seats going to polls on October 30, BJP's ally United People's Party, Liberal (UPPL) has given their candidates in two other seats.

The party nominated Jiran Basumatary for Gossaigaon and Jolen Daimary for Tamulpur, UPPL working president Rwngwra Narzary.

Speaking about West Bengal by-poll results, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the by-election in Bhabanipur assembly constituency in South Kolkata defeated her nearest rival Priyanka Tibrewal of BJP by a record margin of 58,832 votes. Previously Banerjee had the record of winning from this constituency by a margin of 54,213 votes in 2011. With this win, Banerjee secured her position as the Chief Minister of West Bengal.

After 21 rounds of counting, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee secured 84,709 of the total 1,17,875 votes, securing more than 71 per cent of the total votes polled while Tibrewal secured 26,350 votes, little more than 22 per cent of the votes. CPI(M) candidate Shreejib Biwas managed to get only 4,201 votes.
