Assam: Cabinet Forms Sub-Committee To Rehabilitate Child Marriage Victim

The sub-committee includes, health minister, Keshab Mahanta, education minister, Ranoj Pegu and finance minister, Ajanta Neog.

GUWAHATI: On Thursday, Assam Cabinet ordered the state police department to continue with the crackdown against child marriage in the state. However, the cabinet has concluded to form a sub-committee, in order to extract ways and possibilities of rehabilitation of victim girls in the crackdown process. 

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted regarding the same and mentioned that, Assam Cabinet is satisfied with the state's police unit and has directed them to carry on with the clampdown. Along with that, the panel also concluded to form a cabinet sub-committee which will facilitate in extracting ways and possibilities and finalise Rehabilitation Police within 15 days of time period for the victim girls. 

Notably, the sub-committee includes, health minister, Keshab Mahanta, education minister, Ranoj Pegu and finance minister, Ajanta Neog. Ranoj Pegu while interacting with the media informed that the committee will research on varied ways to rehabilitate the girls, who got married earlier. 

The prime motive of the committee will revolve around bettering the situation of each girls who had to go through negative experiences because of child marriage. Recently, the state administration has directed all hospital setups and health authorities to prepare a list of underage pregnancy in the state. Along with that, the police departments are ordered to follow up with the list and track down the culprits of child marriage. 

As per health officials, the state administration has directed all hospitals to inform police if any individual under the age of 18 years registers for pregnancy test. According to sources, this particular tactic will facilitate in apprehension process of people who are in connection with child marriage in the state. Joint Director of Health Services, Kandarpa Das mentions that, no cases of underage pregnancy has been registered in the hospitals ever since the drive against child marriage has been launched. This might be due to legal fears, he added.
