Assam: Central team for Jal Shakti Abhiyan visits Dima Hasao

HAFLONG: Secretary of Dima Hasao Autonomous Council, Partha Johori, inaugurated the Jal Shakti Kendra at Dima Hasao Autonomous Council, Haflong under ‘Jal Shakti Abhiyan’, in presence of Central Nodal Officer of Jal Shakti Abhiyan for Dima Hasao, Sangeet Singla, Director, Food & Public Distribution, who was accompanied by Technical Officer of Jal Shakti Abhiyan, Dr Nilomoni Barman, Scientist, Central Ground Water, Eastern Region.

Others present in the meeting were Deputy Secretary, Prabhat Pegu, DHAC and other line department officials.

Speaking in the meeting, Secretary, Partha Johori said that the central team for Jal Shakti Abhiyan had visited Dima Hasao to make a field visit and coordinate with line department on the progress of the Jal Shakti Abhiyan.

Addressing the line departments Sangeet Singla said that the main objective of opening the Jal Shakti Kendra is to generate awareness among the general public, students and all stakeholders regarding water conservation /preservation methods, including rain water harvesting, renovation of traditional water bodies tanks, ponds and natural method to recharge of stream water and judicious use of water. He informed that the main motive to establish Jal Shakti Kendra is to spread mass awareness about the Jal Jeevan Mission and different schemes under this prestigious project with the aim to provide water to every house. This Kendra will be an information centre for management and conservation of water resources in the district. He also urged the line departments to give a brief account on their respective activities and issues related to water.

While welcoming the Central Nodal Officer, Deputy Secretary, Prabhat Pegu, DHAC, urged the officers to express their doubt freely with the central team.

Dr Nilamoni Barman urged the line departments officials to make the general public aware about developing water-saving habits and using the precious natural resources judiciously to save it for future generations and to plant trees to mitigate the adverse effects of soil erosion and water scarcity. Focusing on the stream water source, he highlighted that various activities and traditional methods could be carried out for sustainability of water.

Later, the central team also visited the public water supply system along with the officials concerned of the departments to know the functionality of the scheme.
