DIBRUGARH: Chhath Puja was celebrated in Dibrugarh with traditional rituals. People dressed in colourful clothes and carrying basket full of offerings converged at the riverside on Monday to celebrate the puja. Arghya (offerings), comprising fresh fruits, vegetables and sweets, were made as parts of the rituals. Due to rising level of Brahmaputra river, permission has been given to a few ghats to host the festival. People celebrated the festival with pomp and gaiety. Union minister Rameswar Teli visited the ghats in Dibrugarh during the festival.
“This time permission has been given to five ghats to conduct the puja due to rising level of river Brahmaputra. We have observed Chhath Puja in a disciplined and peaceful way at Tinkonia ghat. Following all traditions, we have celebrated the festival. At 5.38 a.m on Monday the puja was concluded. All the five committees have taken all necessary steps for the puja,” said Jitendra Srivastav, a member of Tinkonia Chhat puja committee.
Similar scenes were seen in other areas of Dibrugarh as devotees, predominantly from the Hindi-speaking communities, made their way to the nearest water bodies to pay obeisance to the Sun God at sunset.
