The state administration, led by Bharatiya Janata Party, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, launched the Ayushman Asom-Mukhya Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana on Wednesday, which provides a family health insurance policy that covers medical treatment up to Rs 5 lakh per household.

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma compared the Mukhya Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana and the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana to a "double-engine government" in order to promote inexpensive healthcare. Sarma further stated that both the central and state governments have been promoting socioeconomic empowerment since they came into power.

Himanta Biswa Sarma also stated that anyone with an Aadhaar card can apply for the plan, which will be available in over 300 hospitals.

"Beneficiaries will be able to receive services in more than 300 impaneled hospitals in Assam, as well as all AB-PMJAY impaneled hospitals across the country, under this scheme." The scheme will cover almost 2.6 million recipient families, according to Sarma.

"Assam's transformative healthcare system is a remarkable demonstration of a government with two engines." The Hon PM envisioned Ayushman Bharat to provide universal healthcare. I launched Ayushman Asom today to broaden its scope. Under these initiatives, 56 lakh families will receive cashless insurance worth up to 5 lakh rupees," Sarma stated on Twitter.
