GUWAHATI: On the 'Hindu Ekta Yatra,' Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma blasted at All-India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi and claimed he will close 300 more madrassas this year.
“We are working to stop love jihad in Assam, and we are also working towards closing down Madrassas in the state. After I became CM, I closed 600 madrassas in Assam. I want to tell Owaisi that I will close 300 more madrassas this year,” Sarma said.
Himanta Biswa Sarma also stated that the country's Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be enacted and that polygamy would be abolished.
"There are some people in India who thought they can marry four women. That was their thinking. But, I say you will not be able to do four marriages. Those days are going to come to an end. That day is not far. Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is going to come in India and the time has also come to make India a truly secular nation," Sarma said.
CM Sarma, on the other hand, stated that he has closed 600 madrassas and that he wants more schools, colleges, and universities to replace those madrassas.
In January, CM Sarma stated that the state government intends to minimize the number of madrassas in the state and begin system registration.
Addressing a press conference, the Assam Chief Minister said, "We want to reduce the number of Madrasas in the state in the first phase."
"We want to put general education in Madrasas and start a system of registration in Madrasas," he added.
On the other hand, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made a comment about Congress’ victory in the Karnataka election and said "...They (Congress) just won in one state and making a big deal out of India, we have won in several states but we never overreacted..."
