GUWAHATI: The 8.25-kilometer Majuli-Jorhat bridge over the Brahmaputra was inaugurated by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday.

Chief Minister Sarma also proposed the development of a second bridge, this time connecting Lakhimpur and Majuli, at Dhunaguri near Bongalmora.

The development has already been approved by the national government with a budget of Rs 925.47 crore. "Launched building work of 8.25 km Majuli-Jorhat Bridge with immediate approaches over river Brahmaputra on NH 715K at Dakshinpat in Majuli," chief minister Sarma said on Twitter, alongside photos of the project's start.

Chief Minister Sarma tweeted, "We are thankful to Hon PM Sri @narendramodi & Hon Union Min Sri @nitin gadkari for sanctioning this Rs 925.47 crore investment." A Ministerial team is being formed to oversee the site's day-to-day development, according to another tweet from chief minister Sarma.

The overpass is expected to open in November 2025, according to the Assam government. The Assam government would also invest Rs 750 crore in the development of the new bridge linking Majuli and Lakhimpur at Dhunaguri near Bongalmora, according to Chief Minister Sarma.

"A Cabinet Committee has been formed to oversee the project's day-to-day progress. "By November 2025, we want to open this bridge," Assam's chief minister tweeted. "GoA would also build a new bridge linking Majuli and Lakhimpur at Dhunaguri using its own resources worth Rs 750 crore," he added.

The chief minister also expressed gratitude Union Cabinet member and erstwhile Assam chief minister Sarbanand Sorwal for his endeavours in assisting in the construction of the bridge, asserting that it will provide a fundamental change in interconnection between Jorhat and Majuli, resulting in accelerated advancement in the district.
