Guwahati: Reacting to the Opposition's Vice Presidential candidate Margaret Alva's call for support, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said he has no role to play in the election of Vice President of India.

The opposition Vice President candidate had earlier claimed that she is in talks with a few Chief Ministers like Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath, and Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai seeking support for the election.

Taking to the micro-blogging site Twitter, CM Sarma said, ''Smt. @alva_margaret spoke to me this morning. I politely told her that I'm not a member of the electoral college. As such I have no role in the election of Vice President of India.''

Alva further said that she plans to ask Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP Chief JP Nadda for support in the upcoming Vice-Presidential elections.

"I have started talking to the chief ministers of all the states who are supporting me but I will also talk to the chief ministers who are not in my support. I will talk to Karnatak CM, Assam CM, and even UP CM," she added.

On Friday, Alva also slammed TMC's decision to abstain from voting in V-P elections.

Earlier this week, TMC's Abhishek Banerjee said that the party had decided not to participate in the vice-presidential election to be held on August 6.

Meanwhile, the National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) nominee is former West Bengal governor Jagdeep Dhankhar and the poll is scheduled to be held on August 6.
