Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has slammed organizations who are opposing the state government's move to teach maths and science subjects in English medium from Class III to Class X in all government schools.

Sarma hitting at them said that those opposing the move must give an affidavit that their children will not study in English medium school.

Interestingly, All Assam Students Union and the Asom Sahitya Sabha are some of the organizations that have been reportedly opposing this move of the Assam government.

"We have seen children of those opposing study in English medium schools however they do not want others to study. Let them give an affidavit their children will not study in English medium school," ET quoted Sarma as saying.

The Assam CM also asked these organizations not to play with the sentiments of common people for their personal motives.

Recently the cabinet of Assam has come up with an extraordinary idea to increase the success rate of Assamese students in national competitive examinations and other academic fields, making English a compulsory medium for Mathematics and Science teaching and learning from class three to twelve standards.

Notably, the Assam Cabinet's decision to teach Science and Mathematics in the English language instead of Assamese, Bodo, or other vernacular languages and to not provincialize any more venture schools has drawn flak from the Axam Xahitya Xabha (AXX), All Assam Students' Union (AASU), Bodo Sahitya Sabha (BSS) and the All Bodo Students' Union (ABSU).

A joint meeting of the AXX, AASU, ABSU, and BSS earlier in August in which the organizations slammed the Cabinet's decisions, which they claimed would have a detrimental effect on the education sector in Assam.

They termed these decisions as 'unscientific', 'illogical', and 'unnecessary'. They unanimously said that if implemented, these decisions would push Assamese, Bodo, and vernacular medium schools to the brink of destruction.

The organizations added that these decisions were contrary to the National Education Policy, 2020 which encourages education, particularly at the primary level, in the mother tongue.
