JAMUGURIHAT: The National Human Rights and Crime Control Bureau (NHRCCB) has opined that the rich treasury of songs in Assam has been undermined by some so-called singers.

In a press release, NHRCCB State Media Officer Mrinmay Kr. Nath said that the organization has decided to submit a petition by e-mail to the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court and also send a letter to Bimal Bora, Minister of Cultural Affairs, Assam, through Padma Hazarika, MLA of Sootea LAC, to take action to protect the cultural fertility of Assam from the threat posed by such acts.

Babul Bora, president, and Pankaj Saikia and Hiteswar Kakati, joint secretaries of Sanmilita Yuvak Sangha, Jamugurihat, had submitted a written complaint to NHRCCB, Assam to take proper measures in this regard. The organization said that the insult to Assamese songs is unacceptable and warned the so-called singers to refrain from using the Assamese language to insult the rich cultural sources and the art of performing songs. In the statement, Nishant Thard, the State president of NHRCCB, also said that Assamese songs have a uniqueness and great artistes like Dr Bhupen Hazarika and other singers of repute had established Assam in the world arena through their world-class songs. It is unfortunate that songs and lyrics are distorted in various media.

The State Media Officer of the organization hoped that the Gauhati High Court and the Government of Assam would take immediate action to protect the dignity of Assamese songs and remove the songs published for cheap popularity on social media.
