Guwahati: Senior Congress leader Nilamani Sen Deka has been expelled by the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) for breaching the party discipline.
The Congress leader was sacked with immediate effect as directed by party President Bhupen Borah. The Grand Old Party issued a notification where it said that he was warned multiple times in the past to refrain from making harmful statements against the party but he ignored it and went on to carry out anti-party activities despite his written assurance.
The Assam unit of the Congress party seems to be in disarray with many prominent leaders deserting the grand old party. This exodus seems to be fueled by the rift within the party and it has ultimately led to the party getting damaged.
Assam happened to be a bastion of the Congress party at one point in time but it seems like their stronghold is gradually drifting away from them. It has led to a vacuum being created in the state and the AAP and the TMC are looking to pounce on this opportunity and capture the space and emerge as the principal opposition party in the state.
Both the parties have come a long way and are making gains at the expense of the mighty Congress. The Grand Old Party suffered massive blows when Susmita Dev and former APCC President Ripun Bora jumped ship and switched over to the TMC.
On the other hand, the newly formed AAP had to literally start from scratch as they did not have any presence in Assam. However, they have succeeded in establishing a presence in the state and are eyeing to expand its footprints across the state.
