GUWAHATI: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) is poised to take action against one of its legislators following allegations of treacherous behaviour, as reported on Tuesday.

Congress MLA Abul Kalam Rasheed Alam, representing Goalpara East constituency in Assam, is expected to face disciplinary measures in response to his recent comments directed at APCC chief Bhupen Borah.

The controversy emerged when Rasheed Alam made remarks that were perceived as critical of Bhupen Borah, the leader of the Assam Congress. While addressing reporters, he appeared to downplay the significance of Bhupen Borah within the party's hierarchy.

Additionally, Rasheed Alam questioned the role of working president Rana Goswami in the party's operations.

These comments followed a directive from the Assam Congress discouraging its members and leaders from participating in the Amrit Kalash program, organised in the state and nationwide at the initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The outcome of this internal dispute remains uncertain, with further developments expected to unfold in due course.

Meanwhile, in other news, state congress president Bhupen Borah on Monday reacted to state Water Resources and Parliamentary Affairs minister Piyush Hazarika’s letter the earlier day, stating that the government was duty-bound to invite all MLAs to events organized by the government but that the MLAs reserved the right to attend such events. Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Borah said this while speaking to reporters at Congress headquarters Rajiv Bhawan in the city. He was reacting to the letter addressed to him by state minister Piyush Hazarika on Sunday, seeking Bora’s reply to reports that Congress MLAs have been instructed to stay away from events like the ‘Amrit Kalash Yatra’ and that they would be held accountable for attending such events.

He remarked that it was the duty of the state government to invite all MLAs to events and functions organized by the government. However, he said, it was the choice of the MLAs whether they attended or not.

Bora also said that a written reply to the letter would be furnished by APCC working president Kamalakshya Dey Purkayastha.
