Assam: Congress Protests Against Price Hike at Rajiv Bhawan, Urges Government to Take Action

The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee has also urged that the BJP led state administration take immediate action counter the massive price hike in mostly all the commodities in Assam.

On Wednesday, Assam's Indian National Congress Party protested at Rajiv Bhavan in Guwahati, reportedly against price hike. 

According to reports, the Congress party's demonstration at Rajiv Bhavan is in response to the rising cost of living.

The APCC has banded together and asked the government to halt the price hike of all basic items today and work towards bringing price hike under control so as the common people don't have to bear the brunt of it. 

In the midst of the pandemic which has brought turmoil into the lives of people in all fronts, the Assam Pradesh Assam Pradesh Congress Party claimed that the massive price hike on essential commodities have severely affected the people of Assam leading them through hardships and turning their lives upside down. 

The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee has also urged that the BJP led state administration take immediate action counter the massive price hike in mostly all the commodities in Assam. 

Meanwhile, the protestors at Rajiv Bhawan have been apprehended by Guwahati Police.

Earlier on Monday, the opposition parties boycotted opening day of the Assam Assembly's Budget Session by walking out of the assembly hall after Speaker Biswajit Daimary refused to allow debate on the subject of rising fuel and other basic commodity prices.

The opposition parties, the Congress, the AIUDF, and the CPI (M), proposed three adjournment motions to debate the problem of rising fuel, diesel, cooking gas, and all other basic commodities, but Speaker Biswajit Daimary refused to accept them.

According to the decision of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in a meeting held on June 28th, Congress President Sonia Gandhi had issued directions to state units to carry out a sequence of demonstrations against the spiralling price increases of petrol, diesel, and essential commodities between July 7 and 17, 2021. 

Previously, cycle rallies were organised in cities and towns by district Congress committees, with elected municipal corporation officials and Congress employees participating. Protesters held signs with anti-price-hike slogans.

The hike in the price of fuel has been one of the focal points for agitations by the opposition parties against the state government. As of today, the price of petrol in the capital city of Assam is Rs. 96.98 per litre whereas the price of diesel is Rs. 89.05.
