GUWAHATI: In a precautionary move prompted by an escalating Conjunctivitis outbreak among students, Anundoram Borooah Academy in Assam's Barpeta district has decided to temporarily suspend classes. The school authorities made this decision as numerous students were afflicted by this contagious eye flu, emphasizing the safety of the students as paramount.
The rapid transmission of the infection among the student population triggered concerns, compelling the school administration to take swift action. It is notable that Conjunctivitis cases have been surging not only within the school but also in the broader vicinity of Guwahati city.
The Health Department shed light on this concerning situation, stating that such eye infections are commonly observed during this season. However, the current upsurge is particularly alarming. Unfortunately, individuals afflicted with this ailment often neglect medical intervention, prolonging the recovery process. This outbreak could potentially be analogous to a seasonal 'Joy Bangla' case, but distinct due to the extended recovery period of the symptoms.
Health officials have issued an urgent plea for the community's cooperation in curbing the spread of the infection. The ease of transmission necessitates a collective effort to contain its reach. Citizens have been urged to promptly report any telltale signs such as redness, irritation, or swelling to the healthcare system. Early identification and intervention can significantly contribute to a swift resolution of the problem.
According to the Health Department, "This eye infection usually occurs at this particular period of the season, and there has been a sudden rise in it. People usually do not visit the doctor. This might be the same as that of the seasonal 'Joy Bangla' case, but the symptoms usually take a prolonged period to get cured."
"We urge the people to get proper care as this is transmissible and spreads easily to one another. People should be vigilant enough to report if they are found with any of the symptoms like redness, irritation, or swelling to the healthcare system, as early prevention can cure the problem,” it added.
To mitigate the outbreak's impact, authorities are advising reduced public interactions and advocating for individuals to remain indoors as a precautionary measure. Swift access to medical care is strongly recommended if symptoms arise. Health facilities are well-prepared to administer early treatment to affected individuals. The Health Department has launched an awareness campaign to educate the public about the situation and to encourage adherence to preventive measures.
