Assam: Convicted Criminal Hifzur Rahman Who Escaped Jail Shot Dead

GUWAHATI: On May 11, criminal Hifzur Rahman escaped from Silchar Central Jail. On July 10, police shot and killed Rahman close to the Assam-Meghalaya border. Inputs from intelligence led to the encounter.

2011 witnessed the arrest of Hifjur for the murder of a father and son in Karimganj. Additionally hurt were three police officers.

On Monday, when the police tried to take Hifzur into custody, he put up a ferocious fight and attacked the officers. Hifzur sustained critical injuries as a result of the police's need to retaliate, and he eventually passed away while receiving care at Silchar Medical College and Hospital in Silchar. Two police officers were hurt during the encounter as well.

Another prison break in Assam just before this occurrence. Shyamal Pal, a prisoner receiving a life sentence for a murder committed in 2011, managed to escape from Udalguri Jail on April 16.

Prior to that, Assam experienced yet another thrilling prison break on March 19. In Karimganj, Abdul Wasid, a prisoner wanted for a number of offences, including car theft, was able to escape police custody.

Wasid was being transported to the chief judicial magistrate court when the event took place. He is being sought after, efforts are being made.

In May, during a police shooting in the Bortal neighbourhood of Rupohihat, Assam's Nagaon district, a wanted drug dealer was injured. Ramizul Islam, a known drug dealer, was shot in the leg and sent right away to a public hospital in Nagaon.

Ramizul, the most sought felon, has reportedly been arrested twice and has been active in narcotics trafficking in the district for a long time. Later, after posting bail, he allegedly began selling drugs in the neighbourhood.

According to the source, the drug dealer was shot as he tried to flee capture by the police.

During an operation after receiving a tip, the Nagaon police found up to 75 drug-filled containers in his hands.
