Assam Cop Arrested for Accepting Bribe to Protect a Rape and Murder Suspect

The police personnel was arrested by CID officers.

GUWAHATI: CID officials arrested Utpal Bora, a police officer on Tuesday for accepting bribes from a person with ongoing investigation for the rape and murder of a minor.

The Assam police personnel, Utpal Bora was serving as the Officer in Charge of the Dhula Police Station located in the Darrang District of the state of Assam before his suspension regarding the matter on August 12.

Proof implicating the acceptance of bribes by Utpal Bora from Krishna Kamal Baruah was discovered by the investigators from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). According to reports Krishna Kamal Baruah is under investigation of the rape and murder of a 13 year old in the month of June. He paid the officer an amount of Rs 5 lakhs to the police officer regarding the death of the minor who was working as a domestic help.

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam had expressed his dissatisfaction regarding the investigation. He also visited the home of the victim in the Proja Pathar region of Dhekiajuli. He had ordered the suspension of the Officer In Charge Krishna Kamal Baruah, Superintendent of Police Raj Mohan Ray and Additional Superintendent of Police Rupam Phukan.

CID Superintendent of Police Pranab Jyoti Goswami gave a statement regarding the matter. "The bank statement of Baruah, the call records, tower location and travel history analysis have been done in detail and after examining all the relevant witnesses, it has been found that Bora received the amount in installments from Baruah."said the statement.

He mentioned that Utpal Bora was arrested for his involvement in criminal conspiracy, cheating and framing fake records with intent to save a person from punishment.

The report from the forensic team which conducted the DNA profiling of the suspect mentioned "which matched with the fluids on the clothes of the victim". "Adequate evidence has been brought on record to prove the offenses of molestation, murder, destruction of evidence, attempt to rape under IPC and sexual assault on a minor child under POCSO Act," Said the SP of CID.
