Assam: Darrang Police arrested two in arms drill incident at Mangaldai

MANGALDAI: Darrang Police arrested the Principal of Mangaldai Maharishi Vidya Mandir (MMVM), Hemanta Kr Payeng and office assistant Ratan Das in connection with the sensational fire arms training conducted by Rastriya Bajrang Dal in its campus.

Earlier, following instructions from Assam DGP GP Singh, Mangaldai Police registered a case (No 357 / 2023 u/s 153 A/34 IPC). Significantly, Principal of MMVM, Payeng also lodged an FIR against one Abhijit Ghosh for misleading him while seeking permission to use the school venue. In the petition in plain paper without any letter head, Abhijit Ghosh reportedly sought permission to hold training camp only on yoga, work culture and awareness on drugs abuse. Subsequently, the Principal forwarded the application for the approval of the chairman of the school management committee and they were yet to get the due approval.

A four-day state-level training programme of Rastriya Bajrang Dal (Togadiya faction) ended on Sunday at the Mangaldai Maharishi Vidya Mandir campus here at Gerimari. According to sources, around 400 youth from 28 districts across the State took part in the programme where they were imparted training on fire arms, bows and arrows, swords etc. in addition to martial arts and other relevant training for commando warfares. Leaders Manoj Singh, Dinesh Kalita and Subrata Das, while attending the training programme, advocated for a special law to deal with love jihad. They also voiced for making India a Hindu nation. They appealed to the State Government to introduce a strict law against love jihad and threatened to undertake agitation if the government failed to do so.

Meanwhile, on being asked over phone, officer in-charge of Mangaldai Police Station on Sunday night denied any knowledge about such training programme. Following the end of the training programme, the organization also took out a rally in the afternoon. The incident created a widespread reaction among the cross-section of the people once a video of the training surfaced on social media.
