Assam: Death of Another Inmate in a Rehabilitation Centre in the Capital City

GUWAHATI: In yet another shocking incident, an inmate of a rehabilitation centre in the busy Maligaon locality of the city was found dead on Tuesday morning. The incident raises questions regarding the safety of people admitted to these centres.

The incident took place in the Saanvi Wellness Foundation which is a de-addiction counselling and rehabilitation centre located in Maligaon of Guwahati. The person was identified as 25-year-old Mitra Taud, originally belonging to the Dhemaji district of the state. He was reportedly a resident of the centre for the past five months.

The dead body of the inmate was found in the common room of the facility on Tuesday Morning and the local police were informed. The police team took custody of the body and sent the same for a post-mortem to ascertain the cause of death.

In a similar incident that took place a few months back. Following the death of an inmate, the caretaker of another deaddiction centre in the city named the Aakar Foundation Facility was arrested by a police team. Thirty-one-year-old Naba Kalita was found dead under mysterious circumstances earlier. Upon checking the footage of the surveillance cameras, the police identified Raktim who used to beat the deceased inmate named Naba Kalita, which ultimately led to his death.

Mridula Barkakati, the chairperson of the State Anti-Drug and Prohibition Council of Assam shared the details regarding how the caretaker used to beat the inmate as seen in the surveillance footage. She mentioned that Rankim used to tie the hands and legs of the youth and when he was pleading for drinking water, he used to tie his mouth as well for several hours at night. Naba Kalita was feeling uneasy and later he felt unconscious. After noticing him in an unconscious state, the people from the centre rushed him to a hospital.
