TINSUKIA : The Tinsukia district administration has pioneered in establishing three astronomy labs in tea garden schools of three blocks in the district which were formally inaugurated on Thursday by the District Commissioner of Tinsukia Swapneel Paul. The lab comprises of as many as 70 equipment including sophisticated ones like a Dobsonian Telescope, an Augmented Reality kit and a Virtual Reality box. DC Paul said that he had been thinking of such an initiative since the time he interacted with the students under the ambitious ‘Arohan Scheme’ of Government of Assam.
During the interaction, he felt that the zeal of students in tea garden areas and he wanted to give them a practical exposure to basic sciences. The labs have been modeled in the lines of STEM labs (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). The aim of the administration is to make at least one Astronomy lab in every block of the district which will act as a ‘Centre of Learning’ for all students in the block through scheduled exposure visits from all the nearby schools. The DC also said that capacity building of science teachers of Tea Garden Schools for handling the equipment in the lab has been completed and they will act as the flag bearers for sustaining the labs. There is a lot of excitement among the students in the Tea Garden Schools to have a glimpse of the stars, various constellations and the sunspots right from the backyard of their schools.
