Assam: Doctor Arrested Over Molestation Accusations

RAHA: In a very shocking incident, a doctor was arrested over molestation and attempt to rape charges filed by a patient. The doctor was serving as the community health officer.

According to the information received, Dr Prasanta Das, Community Health Officer of the Jukuta Health and Wellness Center which comes under the Barapuija Block Public Health Centre in Raha was arrested by the police from his residence.

A four-month-pregnant patient had filed the complaint citing that the health officer has molested her and attempted to rape her when she had visited the facility for a medical checkup. Accordingly, a case was registered in Kachua police station bearing Case No 126/2023 under sections 354/354 A/354 B/376/376 (2)(e)/511 of the Indian Penal Code.

In another recent incident related to a molestation bid case was reported in Guwahati where a man allegedly tried to molest a woman who is a media person by profession. The man is identified as Justin Kathar from Sonapur. The incident took place near Kali Mandir in the Downtown area. According to sources, the woman and the locals caught him while he was trying to run from the site. A case 1471/2023 was registered against him in Dispur Police Station. The accused was handed over to the Dispur Police Station.

Molestation is an assault to a woman without her consent. If the modesty of a woman is outraged then it is said to be molestation. If it is proved legally that a woman is molested then the criminal would be jailed for a period of five years and can also be fined. The term of imprisonment can be extended to seven years. If she is touched in any of her private parts without her consent then it affects her modesty. The modesty of a woman is outraged when the act of the offender is such that it is shocking and can be perceived as an affront to feminine decency and dignity. The physical touch on any private part of a woman should make her cringe.
