SILCHAR: The Assam Police in another major successful operation, as part of its ongoing war on drugs, recovered contraband worth approximately Rs. 40 Lakh from Silchar on Wednesday.
Based on inputs, a team of Assam Police personnel led by Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime Branch) Kalyan Kumar Das launched the operation in Silchar city. They intercepted a vehicle on the Trunk road and recovered the drugs after a thorough search.
During the search, heroin weighing 400 grams which was concealed in as many as 30 soap boxes were recovered. Two persons have been arrested in this connection.
The arrested duo have been identified as Shahid Mohammad Laskar and Shawhaz Hossain Majumdar. It is further informed that both the arrested individuals were transporting the drugs from neighbouring Manipur when they were apprehended.
Cachar Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta has stated that the seized drugs will be around Rs. 40 Lakh.
It may be mentioned here that there have been many recent incidents of contraband seizures reported from the Barak valley.
Earlier on November 21, the Assam Police carried out a raid in Hailakandi district. In the incident, 15.38 grams of contraband worth approximately Rs. 10 lakh in the market were seized from Tikar Basti of Rangauti, under the jurisdiction of Hailakandi Sadar Police Station. Besides that, the police also managed to arrest three drug peddlers in this connection. The arrested trio have been identified as Dilhara Begum Laskar, Salma Begum Laskar and Hifzur Rahman Laskar.
Even earlier than that in October, the State Police recovered 38 sacks of Burmese supari from Hailakandi district. The seizure was made at a Police Patrol Post along the Assam-Mizoram border in the district.
In the month of September this year, contraband worth Rs. 200 crore was seized in Cachar district. The consignment was caught in Silchar on its way to Guwahati from Mizoram. As many as 4 lakh YABA tablets were recovered from a TATA Sumo vehicle. Total of six persons were arrested in this connection by the police.
