HAILAKANDI: In a significant drugs bust, Assam police on Tuesday impounded 3 crores worth of illegal substances in the Hailakandi district. During an operation run by the office-in-charge of Jamira PS in Hailakandi, over 332 grams of illegal substances were seized.
The police also detained three alleged narcotics smugglers in connection with the operation.
The three people who were taken into custody have been named Nazrul Hussain Borbhuya, Bikram Riyang, and Ajmal Hussain Borbhuyan.
Previously,on March 9, Karimganj police detained three alleged drug dealers and confiscated drugs worth Rs 10 crore from them in the neighbourhood.
The item was seized after a car with the registration number AS 10 F 5299 was stopped by the Karimganj Police, under the command of recently appointed Superintendent of Police (SP) Partha Pratim Das.
The police crew found 100 soap boxes filled with drugs originating from Mizoram during their search, and they also apprehended three drug dealers named Kabir Ahmed, Altaf Uddin, and Qadir.
The drugs, according to the authorities, weighed about 1.27 kilograms.
The state police have seized drugs worth Rs 1,430 cores in the last two years, according to information provided last week by Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh.
A total of 5,580 cases have been reported in the state under the NDPS Act, he added.
He added that 9309 drug traffickers had been detained and that property worth Rs 19.40 crore had been frozen in the previous two years. Assam is one of the top 10 states for the number of cases filed under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
“In last two years, Assam police have seized 239 kg of heroin, 71902 kg of ganja, 283 kg of opium, 98.68 lakh psychotropic tablets, 4.78 lakh cough syrup bottles, 214 kg of cannabis, 40 kg of cocaine.
Moreover, the state police have destroyed 648 bighas of opium and 32 bighas of cannabis cultivation. 26 habitual traffickers were also detained,” Singh said.
“Under the leadership of CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam police launched and is continuing with its massive crackdown on the drug trafficking menace in the state. We remain committed to completely dismantling the drug trafficking networks,” the Assam DGP said.

Singh also stated that the Assam police had launched a 'Drugs Free Assam Mobile App' to combat drug use.
