GUWAHATI: In a dramatic turn of events, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Puskal Gogoi found himself behind bars on Sunday night, after enduring three days of intensive questioning by the Crime Investigation Department (CID) in Assam. His arrest is connected to a high-profile corruption case that has sent shockwaves through Bajali.

The unfolding saga began on September 1, when the CID took seven individuals into custody, including five police officers from the Bajali Police Force and two drivers. The individuals detained included DSP Puskal Gogoi, who served as the Deputy Superintendent of Police for the Headquarters in Bajali, Sub-Inspector Anup Jyoti Patiri, who held the position of Officer-in-Charge at Patacharkuchi Police Station, Sub-Inspector (Promotion) Debajit Giri, in charge of Bhawanipur Outpost under Patacharkuchi Police Station, and Assistant Sub-Inspector Sasanka Das from Patacharkuchi Police Station. Additionally, ABC Injamamul Hassan, who served as the Personal Security Officer for former ASP Gayatri Sonowal, and two drivers, Deepjoy Roy and Nabir Ahmed, were also implicated.

The arrests of DSP Puskal Gogoi and his fellow officers culminated in a bribery scandal that had been brewing for some time. Allegations against them had been brought forth by a supari businessman, prompting a thorough investigation by the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption in Assam.

It was revealed that the authorities had laid a trap to catch the corrupt officers red-handed in the first week of August. However, the officers, growing suspicious, managed to evade the trap. Nevertheless, the veracity of the bribery claims was deemed credible, leading to the registration of a criminal case on August 31.

Former ASP Gayatri Sonowal and her husband Bobby Singh Sharma were arrested earlier on the same day as DSP Gogoi, underscoring the gravity of the corruption scandal. The case has sent shockwaves throughout Assam, involving high-ranking police officials allegedly engaging in corrupt activities.

The arrests mark a significant step in the fight against corruption within the law enforcement agencies in Assam, sending a strong message that no one is above the law. As the investigation continues, more details are expected to emerge, shedding light on the extent of corruption within the Bajali Police force and the individuals involved.
