Guwahati: The upcoming engineering college that is being built in Assam's Bihali is being named as "Chabilal Upadhyay Engineering College" after the great Gorkha freedom fighter who fiercely fought against the British colonial rule in pre-independence India. An order to this effect has been issued by the Higher Education (Technical) department.

"I'm so very happy to share that the engineering college coming up at Bihali is being named as Chabilal Upadhyay Engineering College, Bihali with immediate effect. The Higher Education (Technical) Dept has issued an order to this effect on October 13, 2020," Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared via a tweet.

Who was Chabilal Upadhyay?

A prominent leader of the pre-independence India from the Gorkha community, Chabilal Upadhyay was the first president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee.

Born in Gangmouthan in present-day Sonitpur district, Upadhyay was lovingly called as "Chabilal Babu" by his friends and followers.

The freedom fighter presided over the historic meeting of the Assam Association held at Jorhat on 18 April 1921, which decided to convert itself to the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee.

It is a well-documented fact that Upadhyay played an important role in the education of the indigenous Bengali community of Assam.
