NAGAON: According to a senior official on Friday, the Nagaon district's alleged encroachment on 1,200 bighas (almost 397 acres) of land will be the target of a huge eviction drive by the Assam administration.
Leena Doley, the superintendent of police in Nagaon, told the media that the drill would begin on December 19 in and near Batadrava Than, the revered location of Srimanta Sankardeva's birth, and would last for a few days.

According to official sources, the mobilization of forces has been going on for the past 3–4 days and over 700 police and paramilitary men have been deployed in the broader Batadrava area.
Around 1,200 bighas of land in a number of communities inside the Dhing revenue circle will be evacuated. According to sources, the government has made a public announcement about the eviction effort and requested the residents to vacate the area after taking their possessions.
The state government has instructed the adjoining Morigaon district administration to be on alert to assist in the eviction campaign as a preventive measure, he continued.
"The aforementioned eviction drive has been applauded by the Batadrava Than Management Committee. However, following the revelation of the eviction drive, there is outrage among the locals in the neighbourhood " He Explained.
According to representatives of the district administration, notifications requesting that 1,000 allegedly encroaching families evacuate the land were sent to those families in October.
According to another source, the civil administration and police have been taking all necessary steps to ensure that the eviction drive is carried out smoothly and without any untoward incidents.
"Satya Raj Hazarika, DIG of Central Range of Assam Police, in collaboration with civil government, would lead the operation," he continued.
Since the BJP-led administration took office for a second time in May of last year, 4,449 families have reportedly been forced to leave the state due to alleged encroachment, according to the Assam Assembly's hearing on the matter on September 12.
CM Sarma claimed that no government investigation was done to determine if the evicted families were Indian citizens or foreigners.
