GUWAHATI: On Friday, the Assam police conducted two separate operations in Nagaon and Sonitpur districts and were successful in nabbing five persons and recovering a fake gold statue of Jesus Christ and fake gold biscuit in the operations.
The drive against fake gold is being continued by the Assam police, mainly in Nagaon and Lakhimpur districts of Assam, now recognised as hotbeds of such illegal activities.
The police launched an operation In Nagaon district and arrested three persons, along with seizing one fake gold statue of Jesus Christ weighing 1.7 kg, at Namdoboka Pathar area under Doboka police station.
The operation was done keeping cognizance of specific intelligence inputs, police sources said.
"We have recovered one fake gold statue of Jesus Christ and arrested three persons. The arrested have been identified as Aslam Talukdar, Zubair Hussain and Iqbal Hussain. Our investigation is on," a police officer said.
Meanwhile, in the other incident, two persons were arrested and a fake gold biscuit recovered from the Salanibari area by Sonitpur police.
The accused persons held were identified as Ikramul Hussain and Jamal Ali.
Police launched further investigation into the matter.
Earlier, on Thursday, a person connected to the illicit trade of fake gold and Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) surrendered to the police at the Office of the Superintendent of Police in Assam's Nagaon district.
The surrendered person was identified as Riyajul Islam, hailing from Nowboicha in Lakhimpur district. It was alleged that Riyajul was involved in the illegal trade of counterfeit gold.
The accused Riyajul decided to surrender after SP Anand Mishra issued a warning to him. Riyajul is now under the custody of the police, following his surrender.
Lakhimpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Anand Mishra conducted his first operation in the district shortly after taking over post, to combat the threat of fake gold and currency notes, and on May 23, he detained three criminals in connection with fake gold smuggling.
The three smugglers were taken into custody during a police operation conducted by SP Anand Mishra in Balikata and Haripur. According to accounts, the defendants are Saddam Hussain, Sariful Islam, and Gulzar Hussain.
Mishra committed to fighting tenaciously against all sorts of immoral and unlawful behaviour, focusing especially on the use of counterfeit money and gold. Anand Mishra, the superintendent of police in North Lakhimpur, has made a crucial step towards addressing the problem of fake gold and counterfeit money by establishing a dedicated complaint helpline number.
