GUWAHATI: In a distressing incident that unfolded in the Dimakuchi area of Assam's Udalguri district, at least six members of the same family have been left in critical condition after consuming poisonous mushrooms on a fateful Saturday.

The harrowing ordeal began when the family ingested these toxic mushrooms, which subsequently led to their severe illness. Initially rushed to Dimakuchi Model Hospital, the gravity of their condition demanded more advanced medical attention. Consequently, they were transferred to Udalguri Civil Hospital, with the help of four 108 ambulances, for further treatment.

This unfortunate incident adds to a growing concern about the consumption of wild mushrooms in the region. Notably, just a few months prior, in July, another alarming case occurred in Assam's Dhemaji district. In that instance, a total of 17 individuals fell ill after consuming wild mushrooms. Out of this group, 14 were from Simen Sapori, and three from West Subahi, further underscoring the widespread risk associated with wild fungi consumption.

Dr. Jugen Das, the District Surveillance Officer (IDSP) of Dhemaji, closely monitored the health status of the affected individuals in the aftermath of the July incident. Fortunately, their health improved after receiving prompt medical care, and they were subsequently discharged from Dhemaji Hospital.

This string of mushroom-related incidents serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers posed by consuming wild mushrooms. With Assam's rich biodiversity, various types of mushrooms grow in the region, but distinguishing between edible and poisonous varieties can be challenging. Therefore, it is crucial for individuals to exercise caution when foraging for or consuming mushrooms, as well as to seek immediate medical attention in case of any adverse symptoms.

As authorities and health officials work to raise awareness about the risks associated with wild mushrooms, these cases underscore the necessity for informed decisions, ensuring the safety and well-being of those who may encounter these potential hazards.
