GUWAHATI: In Goroimari town of Assam's Kamrup district , a father-son duo was detained for the alleged murder of a businessman from Guwahati.

The businessman was allegedly kidnapped in Guwahati by the pair, who then killed him and dumped his body in the River Brahmaputra, according to sources.

A financial extortion attempt against the businessman is thought to be the reason behind the kidnapping.

Notably, the police discovered the dead businessman's phone that was in the arrested pair's possession.

According to the police, there may be more people engaged in the crime, and they are currently conducting an investigation to find any more connections.

With regard to all of these crimes, only one concern remains: How safe is Guwahati? According to reports, in the past three months, the police have found scores of unidentified dead bodies in the city. In Guwahati, where the chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has urged the police to reduce crime, such recoveries of unidentified remains have been occurring.

According to information provided by the Assam government during the current budget session of the Assembly, the number of thefts, murders, and other crimes in Guwahati has sharply increased over the last six years.

The number of thefts reported in the city increased significantly from 13,740 crimes reported between 2011 and March 2016 to 23,311 occurrences between April 2016 and February 2022. The numbers were provided in response to a query posed by AGP MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita on Monday, March 28, by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who also oversees the State's Home department.

In addition to thefts, kidnapping, pickpocketing, homicide, and looting events have all increased significantly in Guwahati during that time.

Over 2,546 kidnapping instances were reported in Guwahati between 2011 and 2016, however, between 2016 and 2022, there were 3,648 occurrences, a significant rise. Similarly, during the same time period, there were 425 murders, up from 395.

Between April 2016 and February 2022, Guwahati saw 31,005 criminal cases, up from 18,666 cases between 2011 and March 2016.

The number of murder cases in the state increased from 1131 in 2020 to 1192 in 2021. 37 murder cases were reported to the Guwahati Police between January and July of this year. This year's August saw the recovery of ten bodies by the police.
