Assam: Ferry Services Between Majuli and Jorhat Suspended

Heavy rains in parts of Arunachal Pradesh and Upper Assam have led to an increase in the water levels in recent times in the Brahmaputra River.

JORHAT: Rise in the levels of water in the Brahmaputra River has led to a temporary suspension of the ferry services between Jorhat and Majuli. The ferry services to both Kamalabari and Aphalamukh ghats remain suspended till further notice.

Heavy rains in parts of Arunachal Pradesh and Upper Assam have led to an increase in the water levels in recent times in the Brahmaputra River. It can be mentioned that the river is flowing above the danger mark in the Nimatighat locality of Jorhat, from where the ferries for Majuli start their journey.

Meanwhile, an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) from the Government of India headed by C G Rajini Kaanthan, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs along with members Sanjay Kumar Singh, SE, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Adelbert Sungi, SE/Regional Officer, Ministry of Road Transport, Pooja Jain, Deputy Director, Central Electricity Authority, Ministry of Power and Protocol Officers from Assam, State Disaster Management Authority Er Rajesh Dutta, Engineering Consultant (EQ) and Ankur Bikash Dev, PO(DRR), visited flood-damaged sites at Dubia, Paken and Chatrang under Gohpur Sub-division, Biswanath on Tuesday. Jay Shivani, Additional District Commissioner and I/C Biswanath, Lukumoni Borah, Additional District Commissioner and I/C Gohpur (C) Sub-division, Circle Officers, Assistant Commissioners and officials from various line departments accompanied the team during their visit to the flood-damaged sites.

Another high-level Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) visited the Lakhimpur district in order to take stock of the damage caused by the waves of flood. As per reports, the team is scheduled to visit three districts of Upper Assam, viz- Lakhimpur, Dhemaji and Biswanath districts. The team was led by CG Rajini Kaanthan, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs. The other members of the team are Sanjay Kumar Singh, SE, Ministry of Jalshakti, Adelbert Sungi, SE/Regional Officer, Ministry of Road Transport and Pooja Jain, Deputy Director, Central Electricity Authority, Ministry of Power. On the other hand, Rajesh Dutta, Engineering Consultant (EQ) ASDMA and Ankur Bikash Dev, PO (DRR), ASDMA assisted the team as Protocol Officers.
