Assam: Fire Breaks Out at ONGC Rig in Sivasagar

SIVASAGAR: A massive fire broke out at a rig belonging to the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited. The incident took place in the Geleky locality of the Sivasagar district of the state on Friday. With no people in the vicinity, no one was injured in the accident.

According to an official statement from the organisation, the fire broke out at 2:50 PM on Friday. Officials at the spot activated the emergency response protocols immediately and fire tenders reached the location of the incident to bring the inferno under control. They finally managed to douse the fire at 4:17 PM mentioned in the report. Thereafter the firefighters engaged in cooling operations for the rig to prevent any other problems.

The officials of the organisation also mentioned that the well site has been secured and is under constant observation by experts. They also added that no employee of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation or any business partner was reported.

In a previous incident, around 16 houses were gutted in a massive fire that broke out at a slum in Tinsukia on Tuesday late at night, officials said. According to officials, the fire broke out at the Raja Ali Adarsh Path slum area in Tinsukia at around 10.30 pm, engulfing 16 houses. However, no casualty or injury to anyone has been reported in the incident so far, said officials.

The house of a local, namely Vishwanath Mahato, caught fire, and around 16 houses in the slum area were engulfed in flames, they said. According to locals, there was three cylinder explosions were also heard in the fire incident. While the authorities managed to bring the fire under control, the exact reason behind the fire was not known. Further details are awaited.
