Assam Flood: Over 21000 Affected as Situation Worsens

A total of eighteen revenue circles across the state are facing flood-related problems.

GUWAHATI: The flood situation has turned worse in recent times with the increased rainfall in parts of Arunachal Pradesh. This change comes in the last 3-4 days after the situation has seen improvements in the previous week. As per the report published by the Flood Reporting and Information Management System of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority on the afternoon of July 7, over 21000 are affected now, compared to around 5000 as per its previous report.

As per the report, the Lamkhimpur, Dhemajo, Charideo, Karimganj, Jorhat and Kamrup districts as well as the Biswanath Subdivision are now affected by the rising waters. A total of eighteen revenue circles across these districts and subdivisions are facing flood-related problems. Halem and Gohpur of Biswanath, Sonari of Charaideo, Sissiborgaon, Jonai, Gogamukh and Dhemaji of Dhemaji, Teok and Jorhat East of Jorhat, Hajo and North Guwahati of Kamrup, Patharkandi of Karimganj, North Lakhimpur, Bihpuria, Nowboicha, Kadam, Subansiri, and Narayanpur of Lakhimpur are the revenue circles affected.

A total of 121 villages have come under the effect of the recent rise in water levels affecting 21723 people according to the report. This includes 9327 men, 8343 women and 4053 children. A total of 1479.27 hectares of cultivated land are also under water across the state with Dhemaji and Lakhimpur being the worst affected districts of the state.

The Disang River is flowing above the danger mark in Nanglamuraghat and the Dikhou River in Sivasagar. Relief material distribution centres have been set up at Halem in Biswanath, Sonari in Charaideo, Dhemaji in Dhemaji, Jorhat East in Jorhat, Patherkandi in Karimganj and Kadam in Lakhimpur. A relief camp has also been set up at Kadam in Lakhimpur. An embankment has also been damaged in Gohpur of Biswanath. A total of 24261 domestic animals have also been affected.
