Assam floods: Flood affects 468 villages across Barpeta district

BARPETA: The mighty Brahmaputra has been flowing 1.67 metres above danger level. The Kurichhu Hydropower Plant of Bhutan has been releasing excess water which has wreaked havoc in Barpeta district.

As per information of Barpeta district administration, on Wednesday, Bhutan released 842,00 cumecs at 9 am and 842.00 cumecs at 12 pm. It flooded most of the villages of Barpeta district. The five rivers of the district - Brahmaputra, Beki, Nakhanda, Marachowlkhowa and Bhelengi - are flowing above danger level. Till now, all total 468 villages have been affected by flood. All total 51,44,323 people and 16,876 hectares cropland have been affected by the devastating flood. Barpeta district administration has set up 35 relief centres and 46 relief camps. On Tuesday, Bigari Bodo (21), son of Bishnu Bodo of Jabrikuchi, Sarthebari revenue circle drowned and on Wednesday, Achyut Nath, son of Budoram Nath of Gahiya village, drowned in the flood water. SDRF jawans have been engaged for rescue operation at Bajali subdivision.
