SILCHAR: The massive flood in Silchar left Goldighi Shopping Mall, a landmark structure in the entire southern Assam in a devastating condition. The Silchar municipal board- run Goldighi mall, situated at the heart of the town in Premtala, is a huge G+4 structure with a huge basement, mainly used as parking area and a part of it houses 26 shops. The devastating flood caused massive loss to the traders of the mall as for last 19 days the mall was closed. Till now 26 lakh litres of water was pumped out from the basement. Transformer was also badly affected and thus electricity supply could not be restored. All the 26 shops at the basement were completely damaged. The water level in the basement was more than eight feet and a Shiva temple in the basement was also underwater.

Traders, who assembled in a meeting, urged the municipality authority and district administration to take immediate steps to make the mall run again. A few traders expressed resentment as none from the district administration nor the public representatives even visited the mall which pays a considerable amount to the municipality exchequer as taxes. Ramanuj Gupta, who runs a posh eatery in the top floor of the mall requested the administration to make the mall operational as soon as possible.

However, Ashutosh Deka, Executive Officer of Silchar Municipal Board said, steps had been taken already but the damage was so huge that it will take time.
