Assam floods: Flood situation improves in Barpeta district

BARPETA: Though the flood situation has improved in Barpeta district and the river water is in receding trend for the last three days, four lakh people are still reeling under flood. The situation under Baghbar, Barpeta and Kalgachia and Chenga revenue circle areas remains grim and most of the villages under these revenue circles have had to bear the brunt of flood for more than one month at a stretch. According to official report, total number of affected villages is 214. Kalgachia revenue circle tops the tally with 81 villages followed by Baghbar, Chenga and Barpeta with 53, 51 and 29 respectively. As far as population is concerned, Kalgachia circle with 1,82,222 people tops the list. The number of affected people under Baghbar, Chenga and Barpeta circle are 87,000, 76,356 and 35,430 respectively. The Brahmaputra, Beki and Bhelengi are still flowing above danger level but the water level is receding.
