Goalpara: The Assam forest department has launched an all-out operation to find out the Goalpara jumbo which has killed five persons in last 24 hours in and around Matia revenue circle under the Rongjuli range forest. A team of veterinary and wildlife expert from Guwahati and Manas wild life sanctuary has been deputed to deal with the matter who are camping in the district.
On the other hand, the jumbo is missing since last night. The forest officials throughout the day tried to find it in different locations including the Sesapani forest but it was not found.
Meanwhile, the local people of Matia staged a demonstration against the department infront of the Matia police station for failing to capture the pachyderm. The rogue elephant has already killed Tiken ch. Nath, a senior citizen at Bakaitary, Jahanara Khatun and Mizanur Islam at Mamudpur, Minoti Kalita at Sidhabari and Hasan Bhanu at Upper Boguan.
The Chief Minister has directed to pay an ex-gratia of 4 lakh rupees to the next keen of the victims besides tranquilization and translocation of the elephant. The cheques were distributed by Varnali Deka, deputy commissioner at the Dudhnoi inspection bungalow on Wednesday evening.
