GUWAHATI: Officials in Assam's Karimganj district reported that a former panchayat member and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, Abdul Sattar, who had been missing for several days, was found dead. The police recovered his lifeless body in the Patharkandi area of the district on Friday night.

Abdul Sattar, aged 47, was a prominent local politician affiliated with the BJP and was reported missing on October 23. His lifeless body was identified by the police, who noticed multiple external injury marks, raising concerns that he had been subjected to torture. As a result, the Superintendent of Police in Karimganj district, Partha Pratim Das, stated that a murder case has been registered.

"The family also alleged that the victim was murdered," Das stated.

However, allegations have arisen regarding the involvement of local Congress leader Surman Ali and his associates in Sattar's murder, as claimed by the deceased's family members. The police are actively investigating these allegations while keeping all leads open.

According to Sattar's relatives, he received numerous calls at approximately 9 p.m. on October 23 while he was at home. He informed his family that he had to attend a critical meeting at the residence of the local MLA. Unfortunately, he never returned, and his phone was switched off when contacted the following morning. His family promptly reported his disappearance to the police and party leaders the next day.

Sattar's son disclosed that his father had received threats four months ago from a group of local Congress leaders. As per his relatives, Sattar's hands and feet were bound, and his lifeless body was discovered within a sack. It appears he was brutally murdered and his body was disposed of in a river along with sizable boulders.

A police officer stated, "The victim’s hands and feet were tied. There is a large injury mark on his forehead, but we cannot reveal much until we get the post-mortem report."
