Assam: Freedom fighter Mohan Chandra Hazarika no more

One of the prominent freedom fighters of the Lakhimpur district, Mohan Chandra Hazarika is no more. He breathed his last on Saturday at Bihpuria Hospital while he had been under treatment for old age ailments.

LAKHIMPUR: One of the prominent freedom fighters of the Lakhimpur district, Mohan Chandra Hazarika is no more. He breathed his last on Saturday at Bihpuria Hospital while he had been under treatment for old age ailments. He was 98. He was the permanent resident of Sri Bhuyan village under Narayanpur Revenue Circle.

Born at Maluwal Gaon under present district of Majuli in 1926, Hazarika later shifted to Sri Bhuyan of Lakhimpur district. He took part in the freedom movement with might and main. He shouldered the responsibility of the commander of the Borbali Anchalik Shanti Sena. At that time, he had been in close contact with several noted freedom fighters of the State, like ‘Koka’ Nilomoni Phukan, Rampoti Rajkhowa, Muhiram Hazarika etc. Hazarika was also a social worker-organizer, progressive farmer, timber merchant and an efficient handicraft artiste. He rendered admirable services as the president of Madhavdev birthplace, Letekupukhuri Management Committee. He was also the president of Kherajkhat HS School Management and Development Committee, Bhuyan Banikanta Yuva Sangha, Namghar Management Committee, adviser of Madhavdev Moina Parijat in addition to being involved with number of religious, socio-cultural institutions under greater Narayanpur area.

Lakhimpur district administration expressed profound grief at the demise of the freedom fighter and paid him last homage. On behalf of the district administration, Narayanpur Revenue Circle Officer Hiromoni Mili, Lakhimpur Zila Parishad vice-chairperson Rupa Pathak, Lakhimpur Jila Mukti Joddha Sanmilani along with a number of individuals, institutions and organizations paid him the last homage. He was cremated with State honour. He is survived by two sons and four daughters along with a host of relatives.
