NAGAON: Along with the rest of the nation, the district administration of Nagaon also celebrated the birth anniversary of the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi. Coinciding with the auspicious occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, Nagaon Municipal Board organized ‘Amrit Kalash Yatra’ under ‘Meri Mati Mera Desh’ programme wherein all the pitchers (Kalash) containing the collected soil from every household under Nagaon Municipal Board was brought to the Gandhi Mandap situated in the heart of Nagaon. The pitchers were brought in to the Gandhi Mandap via colourful traditional procession with beating of traditional musical instruments.
MLA Rupak Sharma led the Amrit Kalash Yatra procession along with chairman of Municipal Board Ambika Mazumdar, vice Chairman Simanta Bora, ward commissioners of Nagaon Municipal Board, leading citizens and general public.
MLA Sarma was later joined by the District Commissioner Narendra Kumar Shah as they paid floral tributes to the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi at Gandhi Mandap near Nagaon Swahid Bhawan. Additional District Commissioner Phyllis V L Hrangchal, Additional Superintended of Police Pranab Jyoti Kalita, Executive Officer of Nagaon Municipal Board Shilpi Rekha Pandit along with top officials and employees of Nagaon Municipal Board as well as Nagaon district administration were also present on the occasion.
Following the Amrit Kalash Yatra, a general meeting was organized at the office of Nagaon Municipal Board to felicitate those who have given unparallel service to the nation wherein retired DIG of Assam Police, Debojit Hazarika and retired Army Officer Naba Sarma were felicitated by the local MLA Rupak Sarma.
Meanwhile, local MLA Rupak Sarma also inaugurated the newly-renovated auditorium and the first public library of the district, Nagaon Swahid Bhavan.
