GUWAHATI: Almost three years after the incident rocked the state, Gauhati High Court on Tuesday granted bail to under- suspension Superintendent of Police (SP) Kumar Sanjit Krishna, one of the main accused in the Sub-inspector (SI) of Assam Police recruitment exam scam in the year 2020.

Suspended SP Kumar Sanjit Krishna has been granted bail by the HC after almost three years of his incarceration.

Sanjit Krishna was arrested by the Assam Police’s Crime Investigation Department (CID) on October 15, 2020, for his involvement in the scam related to leakage of question papers of the SI exam that led to arrest of many others.

It should be mentioned here that a written test was to be conducted for the appointment of Sub Inspectors to the Assam Police on September 20, 2020, at various examination centres across the State.

However, at the last minute, the examination had to be canceled after it came to light that leakage of question papers had taken place.

Post the cancellation, a written FIR was lodged by Pradip Kumar, the then Chairman of the State Level Police Recruitment Board. The Inspector General of police (IGP) of the CID issued a statement saying that the written test for the recruitment process that was scheduled to be held at various centers under the supervision of District Level Recruitment Committees, had to be canceled as the question papers were leaked and circulated on social messaging app WhatsApp.

An investigation into the scam revealed that Superintendent of Police (SP), FRRO, Barpeta, Kumar Sanjit Krishna was involved in the scam that rocked the Assam Police to the core.

On Oct 15, 2020, Crime Investigation Department (CID) arrested the then SP, FRRO, Barpeta, Kumar Sanjit Krishna, for his involvement in the SI exam scam. He was later produced in the appropriate court, leading to his remand and subsequent incarceration.

The senior police officer had been untraceable for a number of days before he surfaced at Assam Police Headquarters in Guwahati the day of his arrest.

Sanjit Krishna had been allegedly absconding since he was interrogated by the CID for his alleged connection to the infamous cash-for-jobs scam.

The recruitment exam scheduled for September 20 was to be held for 597 positions at the sub-inspector level in the Assam Police and over 66,000 candidates were to appear but it had to be cancelled following early reports that the question paper had been leaked and circulated via WhatsApp. The exam was held later.
