Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court has rejected the bail plea of former Congress MLA Sherman Ali. The MLA will continue to serve jail time at the Guwahati Central Jail.

MLA Sherman Ali had been arrested by the CM's Special Vigilance Cell for alleged embezzlement of the MLA fund. He was produced before the court and was sentenced to 5-day custody under the Special Vigilance Cell.

Later, the MLA had been sentenced to judicial custody after the Chief Judicial Magistrate court (CJM) was notified by the vigilance cell that Ali was not needed in their custody any longer.

MLA Sherman Ali had been lodged in Guwahati Central Jail ever since.

Earlier this month, Sherman Ali was first arrested by the Assam police for his controversial statements on eight Assamese youths, who were killed in February 1983 during the Assam Agitation. Later, he was also suspended by the Congress party for repeatedly violating party discipline.

The order issued by the Assam Congress read, "Hon'ble President APCC Sri Bhupen Kumar Borah has suspended Sri Sherman Ali Ahmed MLA, member ACLP from Congress Party with immediate effect for repeatedly violating party discipline."

This controversial comment also led to many organisations filing an FIR against him in the Geetanagar and Pan Bazar police stations in Guwahati.

He was arrested again a few days later by the CM's Special Vigilance Cell for alleged embezzlement of the MLA fund.
