Assam Government Launches New Tourism Policy

The new policy encourages the participation of women and local communities.

GUWAHATI: In a bid to further the growth of the tourism sector in the state, the Assam Government has decided to launch a new Tourism Policy for the upcoming year. It was launched in the Assam Tourism Road Show 2022 hosted by the Tourism Department of the state.

An official statement was issued by the state government regarding the same on Monday. The mission statement of the new policy reads, "to create a policy framework and strategic roadmap in collaboration with central ministries, various state government departments, local communities and tourism stakeholders to improve the tourism sector in Assam, to support the private sector engaged in tourism in the state, and to strengthen tourism support segments and its sub-sectors"

The new policy was prepared after a comprehensive study of the available resources in the state. Discussions were carried out with several stakeholders, industry leaders and the World Bank for the formulation of this new policy.

"Our goal with this new policy is to enable the world to view it from the point of view of the attraction. The presence of pristine water, forests, mountains, and rivers provides the state with limitless possibilities in the field of tourism. The new tourism policy reflects the same goal. Assam is sure to enchant the travellers with what it has to offer at every nook and corner. For investors, we have also come up with special packages," said minister Jayanta Malla Baruah.

The new policy aims at the employment generation of local youth across the state. Necessity skill development and on-site training will be conducted in existing establishments towards the development of new hotels and resorts. Special emphasis is being given to women to join several managerial positions in businesses. Steps will also be taken to manage childcare and transportation for women to encourage more participation in the sector. So as to encourage new talents in the primarily male-dominated sector in jobs including guides, cooks, waiters, drivers and other jobs. Recognition will be provided to institutions that employ local women according to the new policy.
