HAFLONG: Governor of Assam Prof Jagdish Mukhi unveiled a statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Haflong of Assam's Dima Hasao District on occasion of Gandhi Jayanti.
The Assam Governor addressed the gathering during the occasion on Sunday and stated that he was immensely delighted to unveil a statue of the Father of the Nation here.
Haflong in Dima Hasao district is Assam's only hill station town.
He said, "I am immensely delighted to have unveiled the statue of Father of the Nation in the beautiful Haflong town. By inaugurating the statue, I have paid my deepest tributes to Mahatma Ji."
The Governor further added that Bapu Ji's ethics and values were a guiding light to our society along with being an inspiration.
He said, "The values and ethics upheld by Bapu ji are not just an inspiration but a guiding light to our society. His ever-relevant teaching of truth, non-violence and brotherhood strengthen the global philosophy of love for fellow human beings. "
The Assam Governor also expressed his gratitude to the NC Hills Autonomous Council Administration for leading the installation process of the statue in the hill district. He expressed that the younger generation will benefit from the statue as they will be able to acquaint themselves with Mahatma Gandhi and grow up with his teachings.
For the unversed, the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi or Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869. He adopted non-violent resistance to the ruling of the British. He also led the freedom struggle against British colonial rule.
His efforts and movements led India to its independence in the year 1947. The people fondly called him Bapu. He had a prime faith in 'Swaraj' (self-governance). Moreover, his principles of 'Ahimsa' (non-violence)won him accolades all over the world.
Globally, the birth anniversary of Gandhi is celebrated as the International Day of Non-Violence. India, along with the entire world, organises various events to mark the event.
