Assam: Govt Decides To Set Up Bal Panchayat As An Aid To Drive Against Child Marriage

The CM also said that, the state government is constantly trying to amplify the efforts of police through strategic interventions by the District Commissioners.

GUWAHATI: In its drive against child marriage, Assam government has concluded to form Bal Panchayats, meetings in the village level, in order raise awareness and discuss negative effects of child marriage. 

This particular news was first announced by CM Himanta Biswa Sarma through his tweeter account, where the CM mentioned that, 10 pockets of child marriage in Assam’s Cachar district has been identified by a lawful team. He further stated that, the launch of Bal Panchayat has been first announced in Cachar district. 

Himanta Biswa Sarma is of the view that, this particular launch is a add on from state administration’s side in the drive against child marriage in Assam. The CM also said that, the state government is constantly trying to amplify the efforts of police through strategic interventions by the District Commissioners. 

All the concerned bodies are directed to extract out the vulnerable pockets, which can be done through Bal Panchayat to make people aware and sensitise them on the topic. As per the officials, the Bal Panchayats will figure out the child marriage prone regions, where the president of Panchayats will act as a nodal officers. 

The officials will be assisted by Angadwadi members and workers, doctors, police and ASHA workers. Vikash Chetry, the circle officer of Cachar district informed that, the teams which will spread awareness in the grass-root level will include kazis and priests too. 

On Sunday, a Bal Panchayat was organised in Notun Ramnagar GP under Sonai block, Buribail GP under Salchapra block, Panibhora GP under Narshingpur block. These were attended by Rohan Kumar Jha, the DC of Cachar, SP Numal Mahatta and few other officials.
