Assam Govt forms 40-member committee to implement National Education Policy 2020

Guwahati: Assam education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today told media that "structural reforms" shall have to be ushered in in order to implement the National Education policy 2020 that was recently announced by the Central Government.

"Thus, we are forming a 40-member committee under the supervision of the Principal Secretary of Education. The committee shall come into existence with several departments which will look into each aspect of implementing the new reforms", Biswa Sarma stated, adding that the committee will begin the to implement the NEP 2020 process within 1 week.

"By January, we wish to bring the blueprint to implement the National Education Policy 2020 in regards to Assam", he further added.

Biswa Sarma also stated that the new 5+3+3+4 structure of the Government brings into the fold the already existing playschools within the ambit of 'formal education'.

"As per the NEP 2020, up to Class 2, and the new class 5, the students have to be taught in the mother language. Thus, the students will have to compulsorily study in the mother tongue till the new Class 5", he added.

It needs mention here that the 5+3+3+4 system of education, the 10+2 system would not change in terms of the years a child spends within the formal education system in the country at the school level. The new structure brings into the fold the already existing playschools within the ambit of 'formal education'.

"In regards to universities and degrees, the term has been changed to 4 years; if students wish to leave after studying for 1 year, they will get a certificate; if they wish to leave after 2 years, they will get a diploma, students who wish to leave after 3 years, they will get a degree, if they wish to leave after 4 years, they will get degree with research", Biswa Sarma said.

Sarma also announced that by 2030, all the colleges will become autonomous. "However, there will be regulatory commissions for these colleges", the education minister added.
