Guwahati: The Assam government has formed Tamulpur as the new district in the state.

Tamulpur is currently a subdivision of the Baksa district under the BTC. The existing four districts under the BTC are—Kokrajhar, Chirang, Udalguri, and Baksa.

''For Administrative Expediency, the Governor of Assam is pleased to sanction the formation of a new Administrative District to be known as 'Tamulpur'. Comprising the whole area of existing Tamulpur Civil Sub-Division of the district of Baksa with its headquarters at Tamulpur,'' read a notification dated January 23rd.

The state government in July last year proposed Tamulpur to be a new district in the state of Assam.

The talks of the decision to grant Tamulpur as a separate district were ongoing for a long time.

"We will create Tamulpur district. Tamulpur district will include Darangajuli, Goibari, Nagrijuli, and Suklai Serfang constituencies of the BTC. There will be five districts in BTC. Currently, there are four districts under the BTC," CM Himanta Biswa Sarma had said while addressing an election rally at Ghagrachowk of Tamulpur last year.

"A medical college will be established at Tamulpur and a new bridge over the Pagladia will be constructed. There will be a government college at Tamulpur with Science, Arts, and Commerce streams. A stadium will also be constructed," Sarma added.
