Assam: Guatemala Grass Cultivation Inside Tea Garden Catches Fire

BISWANATH: The Guatemala Grass Cultivation inside a tea garden in the Biswanath district of the state caught fire, spelling danger to the tea crops as well. The fire and emergency services were called in to take control of the situation.

The incident took place in the Neelpur Tea Garden which is located near the Biswanath Sadar Police Station when fire suddenly broke out in the Guatemala grass that was being cultivated in the tea garden. The fire is said to have damaged several bighas of the crop and threatened to spread into the tea crops of the tea garden.

Meanwhile, three fire tenders from the fire and emergency department arrived at the location and carried out a long operation to bring the flames under control. The authorities informed that resources worth several lakhs of rupees were destroyed in the fire.

People of the tea garden speculated that some miscreant had set fire to the crop causing the massive damages. But no proof has been found yet to justify these speculations beyond doubt and the local authorities are investing the matter at hand. 

It can be noted that Guatemala grass is cultivated in between tea crops to restore the fertility of the soil. The leaves also serve as food for the domestic animals.

Previously a fire broke out in the vegetable, clothes, and fish markets in Jagiroad. The shops were burned down before a fire brigade vehicle arrived late from Morigaon. The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage were not known at the time of reporting. The Morigaon Commissioner, along with the officers concerned, visited the spot today. The residents are looking for a fire department office in Jagiroad, but they are deeply dissatisfied that an office has not been set up in Jagiroad.
