SILCHAR: Senior scribe and noted poet, Atin Das was arrested by Hailakandi police on Friday for his ‘objectionable’ remarks against Mahatma Gandhi.

Das, in his late seventies, however, was released on PR bond just after the arrest. Hailakandi district Congress president Samsuddin Barlaskar lodged a complaint against Das under IPC 294 and 501 alleging that the veteran journalist had openly tarnished the image of Mahatma Gandhi at a function on August 14. Several more FIRs were lodged in various police stations of Barak Valley against Das, who termed Gandhi as a ‘British spy’ and blamed Gandhi for the Partition.

On Friday morning, Atin Das reached Hailakandi police station accompanied by the district BJP president Swapan Bhattacharjee and other party members. After routine health check up, Das was arrested and later released on PR bond. Coming out from the police station Das went to the BJP office.
