GUWAHATI: A mock drill was conducted across nearly 1300 health facilities distributed across the state of Assam to test the Covid preparedness of the health department. Officials of the National Health Mission of Assam mentioned that this mock drill was organised on Monday.
Since the number of Covid cases has been seen to be increasing in the last few days and setting new records, the health department is taking preemptive measures to handle any surge of infections in Assam. As a part of this endeavour, a total of 25 district hospitals, 11 government medical college hospitals, 223 community health centres and sub-divisional hospitals have been bought under the mock drills. A huge number of primary health centres also took part in this drill.
Although Assam has not been affected by the latest surge in the number of infections in a few states of the country, the health department is not willing to take any risks. Officials with the department mentioned that this could be due to the lack of testing in the state, causing a very low detection rate in the state of Assam. It can be noted that only a total of 24 tests were conducted on April 7 and there were no tests conducted on April 9.
A senior official with the health department mentioned that the state has an adequate number of beds in hospitals across the state to accommodate any cases of Covid. Also, there is an ample supply of oxygen to the medical facilities of the state.
As per the records of the Central government, the state had an active load of only two cases on Monday while the number of active Covid cases in the seven northeast Indian states stands at 18 with Manipur having the highest active load of 10 cases. The Union Health Minister has issued an advisory to the states regarding the spread of Covid and urged the public to follow Covid appropriate behaviour.
