BOKAJAN: Police in Karbi Anglong seized heroin worth Rs 3 crore from an i20 car at Khatkhati along the Assam-Nagaland inter-state border on Thursday morning.

Two persons, identified as Nur Uddin (43), son of Sulman Ali of Lahkarghat village under Dhing Police Station in the Nagaon district, and Azhar Uddin (24), son of Alal Uddin of Bhokotgaon under Nagaon Police Station in the Nagaon district, were arrested in connection with the recovery.

“Acting on secret information, a naka was set up by a team of police led by John Das, ASP(S) Karbi Anglong, and CRPF in front of SBI Khatkhati. The team intercepted one Hyundai i20 car bearing registration number AS 02J 2001. On thorough search of the vehicle, 45 boxes of soap cases containing 575 grams of heroin were recovered from a secret chamber made in the dashboard of the vehicle,” a senior police official said.

According to police, “The confiscated consignment of drugs was transported from Dimapur and was intended to be delivered somewhere in Nagaon. Further interrogation is on to ascertain the exact place of delivery and a follow-up action shall also be initiated,” a police officer informed.

Khatkhati and Laharijan of the Karbi Anglong district have recently witnessed an increase in drug trafficking activities originating from Manipur. However, due to the ongoing clashes between the Kukis and the Meiteis since May 3, drug trafficking has significantly decreased in the area, with only a few isolated incidents reported over the past several months.

Recently, on September 25, a bulk consignment of heroin was recovered from a person who was detained near the Karagaon police patrol post under Khatkhati police station. The suspect was attempting to cross the checkpost on foot carrying a plastic bag containing 47 soap boxes of heroin weighing 583.08 grams. He was identified as Samsul Haque (43), son of Sokat Ali of Guashpur, Ward No. 9 in the Karimganj district.

The continued anti-drug trafficking operations in the Khatkhati and Lahorijan areas of Karbi Anglong are a significant accomplishment in the ongoing efforts to combat the menace of drugs in Assam.
