Assam: Historic Gova Deoraja Jonbeel Mela set to enchant Jagiroad from today

JAGIROAD: The historical Gova Deoraja Jonbeel Mela is all set to be held on the banks of Jonbeel, four kilometers north of Jagiroad , for three days from January 18. The traditional fair is rich in the heritage of exchange customs (barter) that has been lost from the mechanized world. People from different ethnic groups from Meghalaya, Karbi Anglong and other parts of the State have already flocked to the fair grounds to exchange their agricultural products in the mela. There will be chicken fight and mass fishing festival in Jonbeel Mela along with the historic royal exchange, that is, barter.  Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma will be the chief guest at the Raj Darbar to be held at Melathali on January 18 and the Chief Minister will present Raj bhatta to the 17 traditional Tiwa Rajas. A research team from UNESCO will visit the mela. The  Morigaon district administration and Tiwa Autonomous Council, Morigaon have extended full support to smoothly organize the mela. The mela organizing committee secretary Jursingh Bordoloi urged upon the State government to initiate special measures to protect the mela venue and develop the mela as the fair management committee is worried about the proper protection of the expanded fair in the near future.
